Why Your Home Network Matters More Than Your Devices
I’ve been reading about the new Asus Zenbook Duo. It’s a dual-screen laptop with integrated graphics that can handle console-quality gaming, 15 hours of battery life, and a flexible form factor that adapts to however you want to work. Impressive stuff.
But here’s what caught my attention. A device that brilliant is only as good as the network it runs on at home.
That’s something I think about a lot in my line of work.
The device is rarely the problem
We get calls from homeowners across Cheshire who’ve spent serious money on smart home tech. 4K projectors. Multi-room audio. Smart security cameras. Video doorbells. And yet something isn’t working the way it should.
The picture buffers. The camera feed drops. The smart lighting app takes five seconds to respond. The new laptop they bought for working from home keeps losing its connection in the kitchen.
Nine times out of ten, the device isn’t the issue. The network is.
When you layer smart home technology through a property, your Wi-Fi has to carry a lot. Every camera, every smart bulb, every motion sensor, every thermostat is a device on your network. Add in streaming, video calls, and a household of people all online at once, and a standard router from your broadband provider simply wasn’t built for that.
What mesh Wi-Fi actually does
A mesh Wi-Fi system replaces your single router with multiple access points placed throughout your home. Each one talks to the others. The result is strong, consistent coverage in every room, rather than a powerful signal in the hallway and a weak one everywhere else.
For smart home installations, this matters enormously. Devices need reliable connections to work properly. A smart lock that hesitates when you’re trying to get through the front door is more than an inconvenience. A security camera that drops offline defeats the point entirely.

A real example from Cheshire
Earlier this year we worked on a property in Alderley Edge. The homeowners had a beautiful home with a cinema room, twelve smart lighting zones, four cameras, a video doorbell, and a home automation controller tying it all together.
Their previous installer had done a reasonable job on the devices. But the network was an afterthought. A single router in the hallway, no structured cabling, and a Wi-Fi signal that barely reached the garden room.
We replaced the network infrastructure first. Structured cabling throughout, a managed switch, and a six-point mesh system covering the main house and outbuildings. Once that was done, everything else worked exactly as it should. The cinema room stopped buffering. The cameras held their connection. The automations ran on time.
The homeowners told us it felt like a completely different house.
Why this matters when you’re buying new tech
Back to that Zenbook Duo. It has Wi-Fi 7 built in. Wi-Fi 7 is fast. Very fast. But if your home network is running on old infrastructure, you won’t see any of that speed.
The same is true for any smart home device you buy. The technology in these products has moved forward significantly. Your home network needs to keep pace.
