What a 2001 handheld console taught me about home lighting
I spent a lot of time squinting at a Game Boy Advance screen as a kid. If you owned one, you’ll know exactly what I mean. In anything less than bright daylight, the screen was nearly impossible to read. You’d tilt it toward a lamp, angle it toward a window, or give up entirely and wait until morning.
It was a brilliant bit of kit let down by one thing: you couldn’t see it properly.
That stayed with me. And now, 20-odd years later, I install smart lighting in homes across Cheshire for a living. The connection is more obvious than you might think.
The wrong light in the wrong place
The GBA problem wasn’t that light didn’t exist. It was that the right light wasn’t in the right place. Owners went to extraordinary lengths to fix that. Clip-on lamps. Afterburner mods that meant dismantling the console. All kinds of workarounds for a problem that should have been solved at the design stage.
I see the same thing in homes every week.
A beautiful kitchen with a single ceiling pendant that casts shadows across the worktop. A living room with one bright overhead light that makes watching TV uncomfortable. A hallway that’s either blazing or pitch black depending on which switch you hit. People work around these things for years without realising there’s a straightforward fix.
Good lighting design isn’t complicated. But it does need to be thought about properly.
What smart lighting actually does
When I talk to homeowners about smart lighting, I’m not talking about buying a few colour-changing bulbs and downloading an app. I’m talking about a system that works the way your home actually works.
That means lighting that adjusts through the day. Brighter and cooler in the morning to help you wake up. Warmer and dimmer in the evening so your body knows it’s time to wind down. Task lighting in the kitchen when you’re cooking. Ambient lighting in the lounge when you’re watching a film. All of it controlled from your phone, a wall panel, or just by walking into the room.
It also means no more working around bad light. No more squinting, no more fiddling with multiple switches, no more one-size-fits-all brightness that suits nobody.
The Nintendo SP moment for your home
When Nintendo released the Game Boy Advance SP in 2003, they fixed the lighting problem properly. Front-lit screen, built in, no accessories required. The experience went from frustrating to genuinely enjoyable overnight.
That’s what a well-designed smart lighting system does for a home. It removes the friction. You stop thinking about the lighting because it just works. The right level, the right colour temperature, the right scene for whatever you’re doing.
Motorised blinds work hand in hand with this. On a bright Cheshire afternoon, the blinds can lower automatically to cut glare without you losing natural light entirely. In the evening, they close as the lights come on. It becomes one fluid system rather than a series of things you have to manage separately.
It’s worth getting right from the start
The GBA story is also a lesson in what happens when you try to patch a design problem with accessories. It works, sort of, but it’s never quite right. The clip-on lights. The grips. The dongles. Each one solving a problem that shouldn’t have existed.
